Business Fundamentals

Are you an entrepreneur in the medical and health sector with an idea you’re ready to turn into a business? Now is your opportunity to acquire the relevant skills.

Over three days (4th - 6th November) you’ll learn how to set up a successful and sustainable health tech business. From getting started and business basics to understanding company structures and building a team, Business Fundamentals will provide you with a solid foundation for your future endeavours. You’ll gain valuable insights from experts in law, finance, communications, sales, and investment and learn how to apply their expertise to your venture. 

Our facilitators share practical advice and guidance on how to establish and grow your health tech business for success including:

  • Forming and structuring your company

  • Basic business financials

  • Accessing funding options for health tech companies

  • Building a knowledgeable team

  • Navigating sales and distribution

  • Negotiation, influence, and stakeholder management

  • Developing an IP strategy that suits your goals

Who is this for?

Business Fundamentals is for anyone working on a health tech solution who wants to start a business who is based in NSW. Past participants include researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs and scientists — all you need is an interest in starting your own health tech business.

When is it? 

Conducted over 3 days from the 4th - 6th of November 2025

How much does it cost?

This course is fully funded by NSW Health for NSW residents.

How does NSW Health support Rural, Regional and Remote NSW residents?  

For NSW residents located outside of the Greater Sydney Region, there is the opportunity to apply for a travel subsidy once accepted to the course. Please continue with your application and, if successful, you will have the opportunity to apply for the subsidy.
Please note: To be eligible for subsidy from NSW Health, your employer must not be subsiding your travel/accommodation costs. Subsidy is subject to funds available and amounts requested will be considered but not necessarily fully reimbursed.

What is the application process?

Submit your application form via the links above. There are 2 parts to the application. Once you complete Part 2, the review team will look at your application and make a determination, you will then be advised of the application outcome, usually within 10-15 working days of submission. 

Do I have to attend all 3 days?

To get the most out of the course and provide the best experience possible, we require that participants commit to attending every session.

Where does the Program take place?

All seminars and courses are conducted at Cicada Innovations’ seminar room in South Eveleigh. Our address is the National Innovation Centre, 4 Cornwallis Street, South Eveleigh. 

Do you take equity or make claims over my Intellectual Property?

No. The NSW Health Commercialisation Training Program is a safe space to learn, fail, and receive expert feedback you would not otherwise have access to. 

However, we also ask participants to treat the Program as a public forum, so we ask that they do not say anything which is, or might be, proprietary, protected, or is potentially protectable in the future, or any information they are not completely comfortable providing in a public forum.
