About Specialisations

Medtech is a broad discipline with many types of healthcare and medical solutions, from physical devices to software and diagnostic testing. There are nuances in each type of technology, and the path to market, regulatory challenges and business models vary greatly - that’s why we are introducing the Specialisations Courses. These 3 day courses drill into what it takes to build a business in each of these key sectors. Participants will walk away with crucial knowledge of their sector, connections to industry experts, and gain feedback from mentors on their product and business. 

These courses require you to come with an idea to work on - this can be very early stage or something you have been working on for some time. These courses will be available in person and online.

Medical Devices

Delivered in partnership with Mark Flynn (Global Edge Medtech Consulting), this intensive course is designed for innovators ready to take their medical device to market. Learn how to implement a QMS, navigate regulatory pathways in Australia, the EU, and USA/FDA, raise capital, and overcome manufacturing challenges. Build a comprehensive portfolio including a go-to-market strategy, pitch deck, regulatory pathway, and clinical strategy. Ideal for CEOs, founders, CTOs, and leaders in medtech with TRL 4–7 projects.

Dates: 3 - 5 March 2026

Deadline for application: Feb 13 2026

By the end of this course, you will understand how to:   

  • Implement a QMS into your medical device process

  • Identify your pathway to market in Australia, EU and/or USA/FDA

  • Raise capital and apply for grant funding

  • Navigate the specific challenges of manufacturing a medical device

  • Build relationships with partners, consumer advocates, advisory boards

  • Build a portfolio of work including a go-to-market strategy, pitch deck, regulatory pathway and clinical strategy

Software as a Medical Device

In partnership with ANDHealth, this course is tailored for digital health innovators developing SAMD products. Gain insights into regulatory requirements, product design best practices, data privacy and security, and capital raising. Participants will leave with a robust go-to-market strategy and pitch deck. Suitable for founders, researchers, and executives working on regulated digital health solutions at TRL 4–7.

By the end of this course, you will understand how to:  

  • Identify your pathway to market in Australia, EU and/or USA/FDA

  • Best develop and design SAMD products

  • Navigate the specific regulatory challenges of SAMD

  • Navigate the data privacy and security requirements of building a SAMD product

  • Raise capital and apply for grant funding

  • Build a portfolio of work including a go to market strategy and a rounded out pitch deck

Diagnostics

Partnering with Pathology Technology Australia, this course supports diagnostics innovators in navigating regulatory challenges, product design, and market pathways in Australia, the EU, and USA/FDA. Learn how to secure funding, build strategic partnerships, and develop a compelling go-to-market plan. Targeted at leaders and teams developing diagnostics technologies at TRL 4–7.

Date: 21 - 23 April 2026

Deadline for application: 3 April 2026

By the end of this course, you will understand how to:  

  • Navigate the specific regulatory challenges of diagnostics

  • Understand the diagnostics product design process

  • Identify your pathway to market in Australia, EU and/or USA/FDA

  • Raise capital and apply for grant funding

  • Identify and form partnerships with the key stakeholders required to drive adoption of your solution

  • Build a portfolio of work including a go to market strategy and a rounded out pitch deck

Pharmaceuticals & Therapeutics

Delivered with Sydney Pharmacy School, this program is for entrepreneurs and researchers advancing pharmaceutical and therapeutic innovations. Explore regulatory pathways, clinical trial strategies, product development, and funding opportunities. Participants will create a comprehensive portfolio including a go-to-market strategy and pitch deck. Best suited for founders, scientists, and executives working on therapeutics at TRL 4–7.

By the end of this course, you will understand how to:   

  • Navigate the specific regulatory challenges of pharmaceuticals

  • Understand the clinical trial pathways available and their associated challenges

  • Identify the most suitable product development strategy for your business

  • Raise capital and apply for grant funding

  • Identify and form partnerships with key stakeholders

  • Build a portfolio of work including a go to market strategy and a rounded out pitch deck

How much does it cost?

This course is fully funded by NSW Health for NSW residents. There is a small fee for interstate residents of $2,100 (ex GST) to attend this course (In person only). For NSW residents located outside of the Greater Sydney Region, there is the opportunity to apply for a travel subsidy once accepted to the course. Please continue with your application and, if successful, you will have the opportunity to apply for the subsidy.
Please note: To be eligible for subsidy from NSW Health, your employer must not be subsiding your travel/accommodation costs. Subsidy is subject to funds available and amounts requested will be considered but not necessarily fully reimbursed.

What is the application process?

Submit your application form via the links above. There are 2 parts to the application. Once you complete Part 2, the review team will look at your application and make a determination, you will then be advised of the application outcome, usually within 10-15 working days of submission. 

Do I have to attend all 3 days?

To get the most out of the course and provide the best experience possible, we require that participants commit to attending every session.

Do I have to attend in person?

No - All NSW Health Commercialisation Program modules are also available online. While attending in person is strongly encouraged, we understand that doesn’t work for everyone and we do livestream the seminars and courses for participants who can’t join in person. 

Where does the Program take place?

All seminars and courses are conducted at Cicada Innovations’ seminar room in South Eveleigh. Our address is the National Innovation Centre, 4 Cornwallis Street, South Eveleigh. 

Do you take equity or make claims over my Intellectual Property?

No. The NSW Health Commercialisation Training Program is a safe space to learn, fail, and receive expert feedback you would not otherwise have access to. 

However, we also ask participants to treat the Program as a public forum, so we ask that they do not say anything which is, or might be, proprietary, protected, or is potentially protectable in the future, or any information they are not completely comfortable providing in a public forum.
