Synbio Sydney: featuring Hugh Goold and Gordon Black

  • Cicada Innovations 2/4 Cornwallis Street Eveleigh, NSW, 2015 Australia (map)

Welcome to the Sydney synbio meetup, we bring together scientists and entrepreneurs to make the world a bit better using synthetic biology.

Whether you are a scientist, entrepreneur or somewhere in between this meetup is for you. At each and every meetup you will hear from a leading scientist in the field as well as an investor or entrepreneur building a synthetic biology startup.

In our first meetup you will hear from two people with very different experiences with synthetic biology. Hugh Goold is hard at work on the Yeast 2.0 project and will talk about where the science is going. Gordon Black has been an early investor in Bolt Threads and has been working closely with the team at Bolt Threads since 2015.

About our speakers

Hugh Goold

Hugh is a part of the international Yeast 2.0 consortium, and in conjunction with the Macquarie University, the NSW Department of Primary Industries is working on constructing part of the world’s first synthetic eukaryotic genome.
The resulting yeast will be a unique research instrument for development of understanding fundamental biological questions on a whole genome scale relating to chromosome structure and function, the roles of mobile genetic elements, as well as serving a useful tool in development of new yeast strains through directed evolution, and novel biosensors.

Gordon Black

Gordon Black, CEO and founder of East West Capital has extensive work experience in the USA, the Asia Pacific region and Australia. Gordon will be speaking about his experience investing in synthetic biology startups.

The Sydney Synthetic Biology Meetup is powered by Cicada Innovations with support from our friends at Blackbird Ventures and CSIRO's Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform.
